"I want to dress the place I look at with suitable clothes.“
This one sentence best describes my work. The reason I create works using fabric is because I want to express the sensations that match the places and moments I observe. Fabric is not just a simple material; it is a tool for embedding my emotions and intentions, and the process of dressing the world I see in new clothes. The process of cutting, sewing, and layering fabrics feels like weaving the fabric of life itself. By selecting and joining fabrics of different colors and textures, I create my own narrative in a language unique to me.
Line (線): The Infinity of Beginning and End
As I work with the theme "I Walk the Line," I take the ‘line’ as a primary motif. Like countless lines passing through a single point, the line signifies the direction it moves toward from the moment it begins, symbolizing infinite continuity. The endless flow of the line represents new beginnings and hope in our lives, opening up various possibilities. Through this line, my work conveys a message of positivity and hope. The crossing and overlapping of lines resemble the trajectories of our lives. Though each life is intricately intertwined, the line expresses the constant movement and change within it.
Fabric: Weaving Sensation
For me, fabric is both paint and brush, a language for expressing my senses. It is a fluttering of the heart, a thrill. Unlike paint, fabric becomes more vivid as it layers upon itself. As multiple layers of fabric pile up and contrast with each other, the colors shine even brighter. This is similar to our lives. Just as experiences and emotions layer upon each other to form a clearer sense of self, fabric is the perfect material for expressing the complex layers of life.
The process of layering fabric one piece at a time is repetitive and delicate, but within it lies my emotions and stories. Working with fabric is a process of visually expressing the elegance, warmth, and depth of emotion I feel. Every time I complete a piece, I aim to express the confidence, grace, and warmth we feel when we wear our finest clothes and step out into the world.
Moment: The Moment of Rest
This work goes beyond mere visual expression; it is a process of exploring the depth and connection of life. I wanted to bring a change to my work by stepping away from the path I have walked and finding 'harmony' through a new motif. Just as many pieces of fabric come together to form one large picture, our lives, too, are made up of individual experiences that ultimately create one big story.
In this process, the warmth and cozy nature of fabric felt like the soft embrace of a blanket against the cold wind. These fabrics provided me with rest and came to me like a warm home that wraps around our weary hearts. This warmth is meant to express emotional comfort, not just a physical feeling. It is like coming home, opening the door, and gazing at the warm table and sofa, releasing the fatigue of the day.
By adding a more three-dimensional expression, as my internal thoughts and line work, which once existed only within, began to manifest outwardly, bringing concrete forms and textures to life, I gained important insights.
Through all of this, I aim to infuse the inherent beauty and warmth of fabric into my work, conveying the deep resonance it imparts to our lives.
